WATERFORD, VA

The Village of Waterford began its history around 1733 when Amos and Mary Janney, members of the Society of Friends (Quakers) purchased 400 acres along Catoctin Creek. Mr. Janney constructed a grist mill and sawmill on the creek in the early 1740's. The settlement that grew up around the mill was known as Janney’s Mill. During the 1700's more land was added and more residents built homes and established shops. By 1790 the growing village was renamed Waterford. Most of the homes were built by the first quarter of the 19th century. The Robert Braden house was built between 1816 and 1820. The Waterford Foundation was established in 1943 to preserve the history and int integrity of the homes and surrounding lands. Entry into the home off of the wrap-a-round porch is through lovely double Victorian doors. A wonderful staircase and bay window accent this inviting area. Throughout the home are beautiful hardwood floors, wide base board molding, period lighting fixtures, plaster walls and antique cabinetry.
