Oakham

Middleburg, VA

Located just east of the village of Middleburg in an area of large estates, Oakham has been in the same family since 1830. The property comprises four hundred plus acres with an historic 1830 fifteen room residence which is in need of restoration. The original section of the house was built by Hamilton Rogers who in l850 added the east wing. The latest addition, which includes the living room and the bedrooms above on the upper two levels was added in l924. The house has its original floors, doors, mantels and much of the hardware for its period. The front entrance has side lights on either side of the door with a gracious fan window above. To the left of the front hall is the Living Room, 30’x18, which has a plaster ceiling medallion, chair rail, crown molding, and ornate paneled period mantel with glass cabinets to either side of the fireplace. There are windows, (nine over six), on three sides of the room. To the right of the hall is the Drawing Room, 16’ x 15’, with a period fireplace and mantel and plaster ceiling medallion, double folding doors separate it from the Dining Room, 16’x15’ which also has a ceiling medallion a period fireplace and mantel, and a silver closet. Stairs lead down from this room to a Breakfast Room, 19’x14’ which opens on to a lower porch and to the Kitchen, 15’x12’. On the second level of the main portion of the house there is a Master Bedroom, 18’x15’, with an adjacent bath and Sitting Room, 10’x10’, plus two other Bedrooms, 16’x15’ and 16’x15’ respectively with an additional bath in the hall.

On the third level there are three Bedrooms, 18’14’, 16’x16’ and 16’x15’, a Sitting Room, 13’x11’, and a full bath off the hall. Above the kitchen there are two small bedrooms and a full bath. There is a full basement. The house requires all new systems and complete renovation and is being sold in “as is” condition.

Other dependencies include a plantation two room school house, (one over one) built by Mr. Rogers for his children and a four bedroom tenant house built at a later date. There is a large stucco, pegged barn that in its “hay day” provided for both horses and cattle. The land is in two parcels, is gently rolling and has two streams, (one of which bisects the property), and a pond. It is mainly open but has a lovely large grove of woods and is currently leased for cattle. The grounds surrounding the house have spectacular white oaks, atlas cedars and other specimen trees which need tending. The property has a gas line easement on it, but no other encumbrances which should be of major interest to any conservation buyer.
